The sigma mixer extruder contains a set of kneading blades and one or two extrusion screws that are contra-rotating. In a w-shaped trough, the blades are positioned on a horizontal axis. One or two extrusion screws are below the blades in a separate cavity. The blades rotate towards each other throughout the mixing cycle, while the mixing screws rotate in the opposite direction, continuously feeding materials into the mixing blades. The screw is reversed after the mixing cycle is finished, and the mixed product is extruded from the mixing zone.

The kneader extruder integrates the performance of a double arm mixer with sigma or masticator blades and with the convenience of extrusion screws allowing highly viscous materials to be mixed and discharged easily. Double arm kneader mixer extruders are capable of handling materials up to 10 million centipoises in viscosity.
