Description

The double planetary mixer consists of a mixing vessel with two beaters that rotate on their own axes, while they orbit the vessel on a common axis. The beater profiles used for the double planetary mixer are the rectangular type, the finger blades and the helical blades. The material to be mixed is charged into the cylindrical vessel with flat bottom. The blades continuously revolve around the periphery directing the material from the vessel wall to the centre.



Blade action in double planetary mixer


A motor and a gearbox that drives the planetary head form the drive mechanism of a double planetary mixer. For operating the mixer over a large range of speeds, variable speed drives can be provided, thus ensuring high torques even at lower speeds. A cylindrical cover for the bowl is located underneath the drive mechanism and is provided with nozzles, liquid spray arrangement, viewing ports. .A major benefit of this vertical style mixer is that the shaft seals do not come directly into contact with the process material.


Materials can be charged into the mixer either through the nozzles on the top cover or directly loaded into the mixer bowl. Either the bowl or the drive mechanism of the mixer is raised or lowered using a hydraulic arrangement. For circulation of heating or cooling media, the mixer bowl can be jacketed. The mixer can be built for operation under pressure or vacuum . The product is discharged after mixing by manually scooping the material from the bowl. Hydraulically powered automatic discharge systems that force the material out through the discharge valve are available for highly viscous materials.


The motor power for the double planetary mixer varies from 30 to 50 kW / m3 depending on the properties of the material to be blended and the blade type. The material fill levels in the double planetary mixer can be as low as 20 percent to a maximum of 85 percent of the total bowl volume due to the vertical setup of the mixer.


Double planetary mixers can be fitted with one or more high shear impellers, that be used to incorporate powdered material or create a stable emulsion resulting in the formation of viscous paste.
