A screw conveyor is used to convey solid powders or granular materials using a rotating helical screw, called a "flight", positioned inside cylindrical or U shaped casing. The volumetric transfer capacity is proportional to the shaft's rotation, and depends on the screw diameter and the pitch. This equipment is also used as a variable rate feeder by adjusting the shaft's rotation rate to deliver a measured rate or amount of material into a process.

Screw conveyors are most commonly used for bulk handling , and short distance horizontal or inclined conveying in the chemical process industry. Special sanitary construction screw conveyors can be offered for the food industry. Screw conveyors can be integrated with bag dosing stations and mixers.
