Double Cone Blender

Double Cone Blenders function mainly by diffusion mixing. The solid material to be blended is loaded into a vessel which is rotated about a horizontal axis. Tumbler blenders, such as the V-Blender and the Double Cone Blender rely upon the action of gravity to cause the powder to cascade within the rotating vessel. Blender movements increase the mobility of the individual particles and in the absence of segregating effects, result in high degree of homogeneity. Mixing homogeneity of upto 98 percent and higher can be achieved using tumbler blenders. Blending efficiency is affected by the volume of the material loaded into the blender and the speed of blender rotation.

The double cone blender consists of two conical sections attached at the opposite sides of a central cylindrical section. The blender is mounted at the centre of the container between two trunions that allow the blender to tumble end over end.

Feeding of the material into the blender is through one of the conical ends whereas the discharge is either through the opposite end or the same end. Blending efficiency is affected by the volume of the material loaded into the blender and the speed of rotation.

The recommended fill-up volume is 50 to 60 percent of the total blender volume. Blending time is generally 10 to 15 minutes. Jacketed double cone blender blenders designed for vacuum operation are commonly used as Rota-Cone Vacuum Dryers.
