Ribbon Paddle Blender

The Ribbon-Paddle Blender is designed for the blending of solid materials and pastes. The concept of the ribbon-paddle is derived from the double helical ribbon blender by replacing the outer ribbons with paddles. Pinching with outer ribbons can result in particle shear, with certain materials being crushed. The paddles minimize the mixing vessel's pinch points along the walls. In contrast to the traditional ribbon blender, the Ribbon-Paddle blender configuration produces less frictional heat and low shear.

The inner ribbon flights transfer the materials from the centre of the mixing vessel to the ends, while the outer paddles gently scoop the material back to the mixing vessel's central discharge. Blending occurs because of the rapid movement of materials caused by the action of the mixing elements in the mixing vessel. Solid particles are hurled at random depending on the rotational speed and the geometry of the mixing elements, and the result is sheared or fluidized mix. Although insignificant, some amount of diffusive mixing also occurs. The combination of the mixing mechanisms results in accurate and efficient mixing and prevents solid particles from being de-mixed and agglomerated. Blenders with low capacities can operate with external paddles only, without the need for internal ribbons.

A spray pipe for adding liquids can be provided. With outer paddle design it is also possible to introduce choppers for the dis-integration of lumps and agglomerates while mixing.
